Artist's Comments

Charcoal, graphite and white pencil on grey paper
Inspired by - er, I don't really have to tell you do I?

Update: 14 Sept 2005
The comments and feedback I've had on this pic since it was selected to be a DD have been overwhelming to say the least. I am most appreciative of all comments, especially the ones that pointed out things they _didn't_ like - hehe. I did it and I know only too well the bits that suck :) But thanks one and all for your feedback and I will answer all comments personally.

This pic is second in the series of the 9 members of the Fellowship (Legolas was the first). The originals are an ongoing birthday/Christmas gift to my mom. So yes, the other 7 characters are coming :)

Many many comments say "wow you are so good" "I wish I could draw like this" and so on. That is very kind but ANYONE can learn to draw portraits like this. I promise. I am the living proof :D Go to this site and look at the before-and-after galleries. See the difference? You can go from "can't draw to save my life" to "can draw realistic self portrait" in FIVE DAYS. This author is who I learned from. Drawing is all about putting down on paper what _is_ there, not what you think is there. Go on - you know you want to :) I am NOT promising a miracle transformation - improving your drawing takes practice of course, but you will radically improve VERY quickly.

You can draw like that you know. All you need to learn is 1) how to draw what you see and 2) how to draw light and shade. In any drawing, everything you need to know is right there in front of your eyes :)

So people tell me............but at the moment, all I can seem to draw are cartoon/anime characters...nothing as realistic as all that...but I'm trying.

Practice makes perfect. :)

Step 1 - buy Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. I'm going to post "Before and After" pics from when I read this book because they're so striking (when I fix my *!@%!@ scanner) . Step 2 - learn to shade a ball with the light coming from one side and understand the five different tones - pure light, halftone, shadow, dark, and reflected light. Do these two things first and I promise your drawing will take off. I only started drawing a couple of years ago :)

It takes true talent and dedication to capture so much expression in a piece like this, and you did it beautifully. Well done! I love it!
:iconkisnet:
Wow...

that is amazing! you are extreemly talented. it looks just like him. but i do have a question. how do you (personally) keep the charcoal from getting everywhere? i have a bad tendacy to get it on my hand and then smudge so i don't generally use my charcoal pencils that i have, though i would like to.
